EAT TO THE BEAT
If you’re into food than you know a memorable meal encompasses four of the five senses: sight, taste, smell and touch. However, there is one sense that is often forgotten and can possibly be the key factor for turning an ordinary meal into something amazing: SOUND!
We had a chance to eat with the creator, Chef Keith Breedlove of Culinerdy Cruzer as well as this year’s first band, “The J Band”, to discuss how amazing food and original music go together like Kanye & Kanye go together.
As I waited for the both groups to show up in the back alley of Unseen Heroes headquarters, I suddenly heard a loud thump coming from down the block. I thought it was just a passing car bumping some new heavy metal tunes. However, it was the Culinerdy Cruzer pulling up with smiles from ear-to-ear.
Almost at the same time, The J Band came from around the corner with style, swagger and a summertime vibes that immediately made me feel like this was going to be a fun experience.
Breedlove jumped down from his truck and welcomed everyone who was standing around the massive mobile restaurant. It was almost like he went into his natural habitat. He started making some of his iconic items that will be featured at GATHER: Oak Park this year.
The J Band and I were mesmerized by the smells coming out of the truck window.
“Food and music have such a close relation in that it can give you memories and emotions whether it takes you up or down,” Breedlove says as he smiles through the window. “It’s such an intimate experience”.
He begins to reflect on one of his most memorable experiences at GATHER: Oak Park. It was August of last year when Conjunto Liberacion brought Cuban vibes to the event. He recalls the whole block was bouncing to the music.
“The music and crowd set the tone for our truck,” Breedlove says. “It made everyone just laugh, sing and have fun with their customers.”
At this point, Jordan Lindsey lead vocalist for the J Band, is excited at the possibilities of connecting with the crowd, and hops into the conversation.
“That’s so good to hear because the crowd fuels our music and sets the vibe for the night for sure,” Lindsey says with a smile on his face. “If the crowd is getting good food, sipping on their favorite beer amongst friends and family; then we know it’s about to be a good night.”
As the food starts to come out, Lindsey revels what excites him the most about the kick off of GATHER: Oak Park on May 12th.
“As a traveling band you can get quite hungry, however its not always a good thing because once you leave California, for some reason, all we ever get offered to eat is pulled pork,” Lindsey says. “So, coming and playing at GATHER is such a treat because we hear GATHER has some of the best food.”
We all agreed that the Sacramento has some of the best food in the country. And almost as if he was waiting on us to take the conversation to that point, Breedlove presents the crew with multiple dishes that he considers “Food Porn”.
Among the dishes that were served, and one that is memorable for the name alone: “Dirty Balls”. This dish consisted of Brussel sprouts deep fried with an amazing vinaigrette sauce.
The day went on to include conversations about how the right mix of passion, food, and music can mix to make one helluva evening. The idea of having both the Culinerdy Cruzer and The J Band side by side to talk about their own passion for food and music just seemed so… perfect. Culinerdy Cruzer feeds off the music, The J Band feeds off the crowd, and the crowd feeds off all of the amazing food. Without the collaboration of the two; we wouldn’t have the culture and excitement that we call GATHER: Oak Park.
Catch The J band, Culinary Cruzer, and an array of food and music at GATHER: Oak Park next Thursday, May 12th from 5pm – 9pm. For a full lineup and event details please visit www.gathernights.com.
