GROW YOUR KNOW: SUPPORT YOUR SCHOOL GARDEN
Supporting your local school garden is one key to transforming Sacramento into a healthy, equitable community. In my work with Edible Sac High, I see the successes of a school garden program every single day. Whether it is a student exploring new healthy foods, or learning how to find the volume of a garden bed in their geometry class, our garden helps students grow into confident, courageous, healthy young adults.
Just two weeks into the school year, our garden program has partnered with geometry, engineering, and biology teachers to bring over 400 students to the garden, incorporating food literacy education into their normal subject area lessons. Similarly, we had over 65 students apply to join the Edible Sac High cooking club this year so that they could learn how to better prepare healthy ingredients in the kitchen.
These successes would not happen without the support of our Sacramento community. Below, you can see two ways to support Edible Sac High:
1) Come to the Seeds of HOPE Harvest Dinner w/Mayor Kevin Johnson + Chef Patrick Mulvaney! The event, held on Wednesday, September 21st from 5:30pm-7:30pm, celebrates our students and showcases our beautiful garden. At the dinner, Edible Sac High students work with Chef Mulvaney to prepare delicious dinner for our guests. 2) Volunteer time to work with our students—Every Monday and Wednesday, there are opportunities on campus to work directly with our students in the garden and in the kitchen. Mondays from 3:45 to 5:00, you can join the garden club, and Wednesdays from 2:05 to 3:45, you can help with the cooking club. You can reach out to the Edible Sac High team on Instagram @EdibleSacHigh, or via email at ediblesachigh@St.HOPE .org
We will be at the Midtown Farmers market on Saturday September 24 2016 with free seeds and plants to share with our community. We would love to see you there! Please drop by our booth between 9:30 and 1:00 and say hi!
