MARKET SHOPPING ON A STUDENT BUDGET
College students, this one’s for you! Chances are you’ve been so engrossed in surviving the semester and turning in those final essays you probably haven’t noticed there’s a new market in town. In fact, it’s right around the corner from the Sac State’s campus. The Market at Power Inn is Sacramento’s only Friday pop up lunch time market. It brings together the best of Sacramento’s food, artisans, and music scene. Trust us when we say, this market has a little bit of everything. Now you’re probably thinking “all that sounds great, but there’s noway we can enjoy it on our college student budget”. Wrong! In honor of your college student status we created a guide on how to enjoy an afternoon at the market with $20 or less.
Something to sip
We like to start our market adventure with a cool drink, especially with the weather heating up. While there are plenty of options, we personally enjoy Zeal Kombucha. $4 for a cup of kombucha made right here in Sacramento, is not a bad deal. They always bring two flavors that rotate throughout the month, but our favorites include peachless and red heather.
Something to eat
Here’s an exclusive pro tip: 11:30am is the best time to grab lunch because it’s right before the crowd comes and you get a nice seat where you can enjoy the band that’s playing. For lunch, we recommend getting two tacos at Masa Taco Kitchen for $7. Now don’t sweat the price because these tacos are not only filling, but made with the finest ingredients. Since this local company is new, you’ll be able to say you were one of their first supporters especially since we expect them to be around a long time.
Something to bring home
Now here’s the fun part, shopping for things to bring home. We’ll admit with just $9 in your pocket, things are looking a little grim. We highly recommend heading to the farmers area where we’ll show you two great deals. The Ramos Farms has a deal of mix and match fruit, 2lbs for 2.50! If you pick plums or nectarines, you’ll usually be able to get 4-5 which should last you till you join us again next week! Continuing in the same area, Winters Fruit Tree Nut Farm has a huge variety of nuts where you can get ¼ lb for $3. This is enough to give you a healthy snack for the next few days. Try the cinnamon almonds if you’re feeling like something sweet or the chili lime pistachios if you’re more of the spicy type.
So what else could you possibly get at the market with less than $4 left?! Our friends at The Rustic Puff were clearly thinking of us college students when they made their mini marshmallows bags for a $1! These little bags usually come in one of whatever three flavors they bring out for us. They have flavors like maple bacon and espresso sprinkle. Their artisans puffs made from all natural ingredients are going to be the perfect late night snack while binge watching Netflix!
These are just a few of our low priced favorites, but with rotating food trucks and vendors, there’s always something new to try! We truly believe this market was made for college students since so many of our vendors have amazing prices and deals. Now that finals are over, you can spend every Friday with us this summer without worrying about breaking the bank.
