SOUNDTRACK FOR YOUR SUMMER: DJ RATED R
All this week at Unseen Heroes Headquarters aka UH HQ, we have been bouncing, gigging and two stepping to this month’s installment of GATHER: Oak Park. In preparation we had GATHER veteran DJ Rated R roll through the office with his all-star collection of vinyl records and had him spin the official sound track to Summer 2016 on the ones and two’s. Along the musical journey we managed to turn down the bass and treble to ask him some questions about what he does best as well as found out about his second life as a Super Hero!
1. Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’ve been DJing for 14 years now and started off battling other DJ’s for notoriety. Still a turntablist at heart, but now I take what I’ve learned to my weekly gigs, in studio sessions and live performances. I’m also part of the turntablist/production group Sleeprockers and hip hop group live Manikins.
2. What do you find most challenging about what you do?
finding the time to practice these days are challenging. seems like my weekly gigs are my practice. but there comes a point where I just want to sit down challenge myself and create something new and dope! Time management is definitely something I need to work on.
3. What do you do when you aren’t working?
I’m a superhero by day working for the department of Public Health.
4. If a kid walked up to asking for your advice and you only had a few minutes to give them your best tip, what would it be?
Practice, practice, and more practice. Try to find a mentor, if you don’t have one yet, here is my info! Passing the knowledge down to the next generation is key to prolonging this art form.
5. Looking out 3 to 5 years, beyond the obvious trends, what do you think will be the next big change in your industry?
Technology has always advanced the modern DJ. I also think that too much technology is going to bring in more robots in this DJ game. I think there will be a movement of more DJ’s going back to vinyl and flipping records instead of pushing buttons.
6.What are your long-term goals, motivations, and dreams?
I’m always striving to play elsewhere than Sacramento. In the past I have played in other cities, states, and countries, but It’s motivating to see your role models playing for crowds overseas on the regular. It’s also been a dream of mine to do scratch work on a Grammy nominated album. I’ll die a happy DJ once that day comes lol.
7.What are you looking forward to at GATHER this month?
Since I live in Oak Park, I’m looking forward to seeing my neighbors out as well as meeting new people. It feels good to play the tracks I curate for this event for the folks in attendance. Other than sleep rocking for the crowd, I’m definitely looking forward to the food, libations and overall fun!
Come dance with DJ Rated R at GATHER: Oak Park on July 14th. GATHER: Oak Park is held every second Thursday of the month (May-October) from 5 pm – 9 pm. Inspired by warm California nights and the emerging trend of the food culture, GATHER is a take on the city as a dining table. GATHER is produced and professionally managed by Unseen Heroes.
